Details

"Fat lava" is the name given to a certain style of West German art pottery that spread to other neighboring countries after the war and is characterized by an extravagant amount of form, glaze, texture, and typical color, from dark brown to orange, from green to cobalt blue, from ruby red to canary yellow. It got its name from the embossed enamel effects often used with orange colors, which give the surface of the pieces a characteristic bubbling lava appearance. The term fat lava first appeared in the title of the German ceramics exhibition held in London in July-August 2006. The production strategy of the craftsmen belonging to this style included rather simple and strict forms, which resulted in a very wide selection of pieces from the combination of different decorations and colored glazes.
